From me, to me.
I spent a lot of time researching ‘starting a pottery business’ and ‘setting up a home studio’; there is plenty of practical information out there but it’s a little overwhelming. One of the resources I found encouraged me to write a letter from myself in the future to who I am today. I found this a really useful process, it went like this…
Hello Me,
Well done for getting this far. I’m so proud of you for taking the leap and pursuing something that’s just about you, look how well you are doing. Just imagine there are people out there drinking tea from your cups, slurping noodles from your bowls, your vases on their mantelpieces. Your mugs have become favourites and your dishes are where people keep their precious rings and a safe place for keys. They have become part of their homes and everyday lives.
Don’t be discouraged when you have a bad day, they are going to happen from time to time. Don’t forget that what you’re making is an expression of you and what you are thinking or feeling in that moment. Make for yourself, not just for money. All feedback is good - not everyone will love your work but that’s ok.
But most importantly….listen. When someone compliments your work, assume they mean it.
Keep up the good work.
Me. x
Below are some home shots of my pieces in action. I’ve kept these three for myself and use them nearly every day.
